Tax Returns Examiner III (Hilo District)

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct examination of individuals, partnerships, trust, non-profit organizations, and domestic corporate organizations with the objective of determining if proper taxation reporting pursuant to the Hawaii Revised Statues was adhered to. These positions focus on legal writing (IFRAC) and assist lower-level tax examiners in preparation and presentation of appeal cases to the Appeal Officer and Board of Review.

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct examinations of individuals, partnerships, and small domestic corporate organizations with the objective of determining if proper taxation pursuant to the Hawaii Revised Statutes was adhered to.

Tax Clerk

This position is to assist and support the tax returns examiners in the examination of tax returns to determine correct tax liability by verifying accuracy and completeness of taxpayers information.

Tax Returns Examiner III

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct examination of individuals, partnerships, trust, non-profit organizations, and domestic corporate organizations with eh objective of determining if proper taxation reporting pursuant to the Hawaii Revised Statues was adhered to. Tax Returns Examiner II

The primary function of this position is to conduct professional examinations of individuals, partnerships, and small domestic corporate organizations with the objective of determining if proper taxation pursuant to the Hawaii Revised Statutes was adhered to. Applicable taxes and issues include and are not limited to: General excise, use, employer’s withholding (WH), transient accommodations (TA), rental motor vehicle, and resident and non-resident status income tax returns, which encompasses claims for credit for taxes paid to another state and questionable business and non-business income, exemptions, and deductions.

Tax Returns Examiner I

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct examinations of general excise, use, withholding, transient accommodations, rental motor vehicle, and income tax returns, including those with claims for credits and those involving questionable business and non-business income, exemptions, deductions, and refunds.

State Non-Civil Service Positions

Administrative Rules Specialist

The purpose of this position is to assure that the administrator of Hawaii’s tax laws and policies is set forth in systematic and orderly manner.

Duties Include (but not limited to):

  • Reviews, researches, analyzes, confers, and provides comments, recommendations, and guidance on the historical, technical, and procedural aspects of legislative bills, administrative rules, department tax announcements and Tax Information Releases.
  • Coordinates the administrative rulemaking process including announcing and conducting the public hearing and collection, compiling, and reviewing comments and testimonies.
  • Conducts special studies on new or unusual tax issues for the purpose of developing and issuing clarification or revising guide materials and publications, and documents to develop and issue letter rulings.

SES Investigator

This position performs investigative activities in the detection of violation of laws, rules, and regulations covered by Title 14, Taxation specifically under Section 231, and under the jurisdiction of the Department of Taxation; gathers information and prepares written reports. The positions may conduct invest investigations including though covert means. This position performs various activities to enforce the laws and performs other related duties as assigned to bring individuals entities into tax compliance.
